MEET  OUR  2010  SCHOLARSHIP  WINNER:

We congratulate our 2010 Scholarship winner, Katee Finks!  We mailed her $600 check to her community college. She'll continue her LVN program there.

When she completes her 18-month program, Katee will become a Licensed Vocational Nurse.

Here are excerpts from what she wrote to us:

"This particular school has a pass rate of 99%, which means all the years they have been in existence they have only had 1 student not pass the state board licensing exam the first time, and that student passed the second time.

"The program will allow me to become a licensed vocational nurse, and practice as a licensed nurse in my state.  It will give me the opportunity to have a career, and not just a job.  I will get to impact peoples lives in a positive way.  It will also give me the opportunity to make better money.    For myself personally, this is a stepping stone for more education.

"When I graduate from this program I will apply for an RN program, and when I am done with that, I will apply to a Nurse-Midwifery program.  My ultimate goal is to become a midwife, and help impact women by empowering them to take control of their bodies in this aspect of their lives.  I believe women have forgotten how powerful and amazing their  bodies are, and how in control of them they can be!

"Thank you so much for the help to continue my education!  It has really been a challenge financially!"

-Katee Finks

Her membership in Women's Southwest FCU qualified her to apply for our Scholarship.

 MEET OUR 2009 SCHOLARSHIP WINNER:

Our Scholarship Committee volunteers received 4 applications, one from as far away as Ohio !  After long & thoughtful deliberations they selected Jessika Reliford (see photo above).

Her membership in Cal Feminist made her eligible to apply.  She will use her $600 award to continue her Organizational Psychology studies at San Diego State University .

She stopped by our office to deliver a hand-printed note.  It reads, “I would like to thank the California Feminist Federal Credit Union staff and volunteers. Thank you for offering this scholarship to so many people.  Thank you for requiring me to make a budget.  Finally, thank you for helping me get my Master’s degree.

Maggie Frankel (see photo above) was born in the Ocean Beach neighborhood of San Diego.  San Francisco State gave Maggie her BA in Women (sic) Studies.  She now seeks her Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science at San Jose State.

“To me, public libraries are exciting and revolutionary because they house (and provide access to) massive amounts of information that anyone can access for free, regardless of age, ethnicity, class, or gender,” she says.

Her $600 check will go toward books & computer programs. She was doubly eligible to apply for our annual Women’s Scholarship:  she and her father had share (savings) accounts at Cal Feminist FCU.

 WHO BENEFITTED IN  2004 & 2005?

No one!  In one of those years, we received no applications.  In the other year, the applicant we chose was unable to use the scholarship because of unfortunate timing. Sadly, we could not issue her check by the deadline her school required.  As a result of her misfortune, we modified the dates when we make our decisions and issue checks.

WHO WON OUR FIRST SCHOLARSHIP IN 2003?

Our first ever Irene Mercado Women's Scholarship went to Cal Feminist FCU member Jeanette Hilton.  She used her $250 award toward her studies at a  community college, San Diego City College.
